Basic Mending Skills: Darning, Patching, and More

Description

Give your favorite items of clothing a second life! Learn how to repair clothing using basic mending skills, and how to determine what mending techniques are most suitable for a repair.

This class will include a short lecture-style introduction to mending followed by a hands-on guided practice activity. Feel free to bring one or two items you would like to mend, and if time allows, the class will discuss the best approaches for your items. Please note that there may not be time to discuss every item.

All skill levels are welcome!

Registration required. Space is limited to 6 participants.

Skills covered in this workshop will include:

  • Basic sewing and mending terminology
  • Evaluating a project to determine best techniques and materials
  • Approaches for mending projects such as: rips, holes, stains, snags, and more
  • Hand sewing stitches and their applications, including: running stitch, basting stitch, back stitch, whip stitch, blanket stitch, and mattress stitch
  • Basic darning
  • Basic patching techniques (internal and external)
  • Visible mending techniques, including applique and Sashiko mending
