Add a CommentThis brightly illustrated book is visually appealing and the rhyming cadence of the story is fun. The little girl narrates her experience with her hijabi female family members out in public and at home. Her grandmother, mother, aunt, sister, and cousin all wear different styles of hijab and do different things, showing that Muslim women who cover are not restricted in their activities. Very cute story!
This book will answer questions that Muslim women need to deal with, unfortunately more often than they want to
1. Do you sleep/shower with your hijab on?
2. Do you have to wear that all the time?
3. Can you have fun with that thing on your head?
Sometimes if they are really unlucky, they will get question like this
4. Do you even have hair?
This is one of my favourite picture books of the year. It really de-mystifies the hijab for those who are not familiar with it. At the same time it is a story which shows many powerful Muslim women in a variety of jobs. Whereas society can look at the hijab and see hijab wearing women as all the same, this book breaks that myth. Wonderful explanatory note at the end.
