It is 1912 and the five daughters of an immigrant family living on New York's Lower East Side are growing up in a home poor in income but rich in affection. The small problems that can deeply trouble a child—like the loss of a library card—are overcome in the context of an understanding and caring family; and the hopes of these girls as to careers, weddings, and adulthood in general are lovingly described.

Opinion

From Library Staff

A great classic read-aloud for early elementary. The chapters are contained episodes; gentle stories of everyday life for a Jewish family in turn of the century New York.

*Good story for multi-cultural studies on the Jewish faith and lifestyle. *Very educational and informative about family and the faith of the family. Here is a quote from the book that is worth noting: "It means we're all close and loving and loyal - and our family will always be that." This is a quote that would be a great motto for every family and assist with making the nation strong. :) :) **Really valuable reading.

**spoiler alert** How can I not love a book where the romantic heroine is a librarian! This was also one of the books that introduced me to Judaism as a child, the rare book depicting Jewish life in the early 20th century in a generally upbeat way. Each of the 5 sisters is lovable, with a distinct personality, but shy, bookish Sarah was always my favorite.
